I am a British citizen. Big fan of your work. I just wanted to say that this current Labour government are not left wing at all, sadly. They are a Labour Party in name only, and have gone after disabled people, the elderly and farmers in the UK since they came to power. They’ve also whole heartedly supported the Gaza genocide too.
I appreciate that, but I think this describes Labour since well before Tony Blair. Same with the parties that were supposed to be on the Left in Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, etc. etc. etc. I think that rather than idealize the Left, it's better to be clear what happens to leftwing political parties the world over.
I think the left sold out well over 30 years ago. Not just the political parties either. More recently they have become a plague of thought police on social media pushing indoctrination into shallow simplistic ideas and performative morality and discouraging attention to facts, nuance and careful critical thinking in the citizenry, just like the right does, and neither have more than an infantilised notion of the real world, though they shout loudly and confidently as per Dunning-Kruger Effect.🤦
Same here in Australia, Emma. It's farcical. They also waved through the previous government's tax cuts for the ultra wealthy even though they were elected with a majority, and they are mercilessly pummelling refugees, the unemployed, etc. Now they are pretending they have solved the biodiversity crisis even though it's still getting exponentially worse (biologist here) and they are cracking down on freedom of information and government transparency and accountability. And how can they represent the average person when they are on the gravy train by default just getting elected. They won't vote against their personal interests no matter what they promise. Completely broken system. Commiserating with you. Bullies running the classroom.
Yes it is. I think it's important to know that "the real world" isn't just humans wrecking stuff. Of course, our dominant culture likes to ignore nonhumans on the whole as any reality except what we can extract from them. I prefer to learn from them and to take joy in them. They are far saner life forms than we are.💚
