Thank you for coming to Madison and speaking on Wednesday. I have been struggling so much with hopelessness and despair related to the state of the world. But I feel significantly less hopeless after hearing you speak, and after talking in a small group with fellow attendees (who I likely will meet up with again in the near future). Thank you again!
I think we need to allow ourselves to be hopeless sometimes, to try to feel what still matters in those times, and also trust that there are still things in the world that can help us find hope again
The excerpt from the book was excellent. Do you believe it's possible to have multiple roles ina community like this? I can see myself in some of the descriptions, and not at all in others.
I love the roles that you describe, but i would certainly hope that they are handled in a much more flexible, or more permeable or alterable form, than having to pick one, two or max. three, as you suggest. Of course, some people might want to limit themselves like that, and that is fine. But others won't. I also think expertise and genius is overrated, many skills can be picked up quite easy. The dilettante approach has many advantages, i think, allowing people to look at topics afresh, casting a wide lens.
Also, what do you make of Graeber who often suggested, that people should be careful in groups NOT to perform the tasks where their area of expertise lays, because that tends to create hierarchies and because basically anyone can (not must) learn anything.

Yep! Check the 2nd paragraph of the quote again!
Thank you!
